“At least three in four West Australians have flushed away common fears of drinking recycled waterand now support adding it to the main supply, according to a Water Corporation survey.”

Well, dang, most Americans, even infamously ecologically progressive Californians, are terrified of drinking recycled water that has been treated to potable standards. Many people are too afraind even to support recycle water use in landscaping and toilet flushing. What we don’t seem to realize is that all the water on the planet is “recycled” in the sense that there is no new water on the planet, since time immemorial.  This means that the same water that dinosaurs drank and peed, that Cleopatra drank and peed, that your great grandmother drank and peed, is still the same water that the amazing hydrologic cycle is providing today. Recycled water is as old as water itself.

“Minister for Regoinal Development Brendan Grylls said last year that Perth residents needed to “get over” their fears of drinking recycled water.”  I couldn’t agree more. When your local water agency asks you to support recycled water use, take the time to find out how this water is treated and all the possibilities for reuse, including using it for potable uses.  Recycled water is a natural part of the water cycle and an inevitable part of our future as water users in California.
