SUMMARY:Walking Waterhoods: Bay Street and Mouth of Temescal Creek
DESCRIPTION:Bay Street in Emeryville\, commonly recognized as an upscale shopping mall\, actually sits atop a significant Ohlone Native American shellmound\, a one-time village and burial site for the Huichin Ohlone people\, sacred to them\, as all land is. \nJoin us for an in-person tour to explore this area’s rich prehistory\, starting with its landscape during the last Ice Age. We’ll also imagine the lives of the Huichin Ohlone along the bay’s shoreline and uncover how Spanish and white colonists dramatically transformed this once-abundant and diverse natural wonder into the Bay Street we see today. \nThis is an exciting opportunity to learn about: \n\nThe “original” shoreline\nPre-historic geography and Pre-historic ecosystem and geography of the area\nWho are the Huichin Ohlone tribe living in this watershed in the past and present\nWhat and where were the shellmounds and why can’t we see them now?\nNumerous iterations of Western development since the arrival of Spanish missionaries and soldiers in late 1776.\n\nJoin us for this exciting Walking Waterhoods tour to reveal the forgotten history of Bay Street and celebrate Native American Heritage month!

SUMMARY:Walking Waterhoods: Fruitvale
DESCRIPTION:Nestled in the heart of Oakland\, the vibrant neighborhood of Fruitvale evolved from part of the Bay Area home of the Ohlone people into the bustling urban neighborhood it is today\, known for its lively markets\, cultural diversity\, and community spirit. As it grew\, it became a melting pot of different people\, standing today as a testament to resilience and cultural richness. From community organizations to beautiful public spaces\, Fruitvale continues to thrive\, serving as a reminder of the interconnectedness of its heritage and the community that calls it home. \nSome highlights of the tour will include: \n— Where’s the creek? \n— The verdant farms of Fruit Vale \n— 1906 San Fransisco Earthquake’s impact on Oakland \n— How transportation has shaped and reshaped the area \n— Changing community perceptions of the creek \n— Black Panther\, Chicano\, and American Indian movements from the 1960s to today \n— Driving social\, racial\, and environmental justice through murals and mosaic art \n— Dense urban ecology \n— Trash\, stormwater\, and Sausal Creek’s outflow \nOur tours are interactive so we hope you’ll come with your own tidbits of knowledge and stories to offer. In addition\, we encourage you to check out our website for extra information about this area\, as there’s so much more to know than we’ll be able to get to in person.

SUMMARY:East Bay Creek Restoration
DESCRIPTION:East Bay Creek Restoration: How it’s going now – Panel Conversation\nhttps://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/east-bay-creek-restoration-how-its-going-now-panel-conversation \n\n\n\nPlease join Wholly H2O and many present-day creek warriors at Part 2 Panel Conversation\, “SF East Bay Creek Restoration: How it’s going now.” \nWatershed Map\, Alameda County Public Works \nMany folks living in the SF East Bay have no idea that we are laden with creeks streaming westward from the East Bay Hills\, that created a vast floodplain that is now “the flats.” But\, for the most part these creeks are invisible both physically and in our imagination. \nThe Watershed Project \nThose of us working on creek education and restoration in Alameda County are standing on the shoulders of those who started their work in the 1980s\, many represented in our Panel 1 -“SF East Bay Creek Restoration: How it started” on April 8\, from 7-9 pm. \nIn this panel conversation\, those leading the way in the present-day creeks movement will discuss the status of our creeks’ health\, the needs\, approaches\, and the alliances we have built between us (or need to build). \nModerator: Josh Bradt – Urban Streams Partnership  \n\nDr. Elizabeth Dougherty – Wholly H2O (Strawberry; Temescal; Sausal; Glen Echo)\nBruce King\, Ann Maris – Friends of San Lorenzo Creek\nAnn Graham\, Michael Gregory – Friends of San Leandro Creek\nSadie McGarvey – Friends of Cortland Creek\nKate Berlin – Friends of Sausal Creek\nTim Pine -UC Creeks Dept\, Strawberry Creek\nJuliana Gonzales – The Watershed Project\, Wildcat Creek\nMore coming soon\n\nThis group has never assembled together before\, nor even met one another in many cases. It’s an historic occasion that Wholly H2O hopes will usher in more public awareness\, more coordinated efforts\, and an increase in county-wide support for the Alameda County creeks and the groups supporting them. \nDate: Tuesday\, May 6th \nTime: 7 -9 pm \nLocation: Genetics and Plant Biology Bldg\, Room 100\, University of California\, Berkeley\, CA (Please see the map at the bottom of this announcement – the building is circled in red) \nCost: Thanks to Zeffy\, there are no ticketing fees for anyone. \n\nFirst in Line: First 10 tickets sell for $10.00 each\nEarly Bird: $15.00 (until April 12th)\nGeneral Admission: $25.00 (until event)\nAt the Door: $27.50\nBuy a Ticket for an Intern: $10.00 (Various nonprofits and governmental agencies want to send their interns. SUMMARY:East Bay Creek Restoration: How it started - Panel Conversation
DESCRIPTION:East Bay Creek Restoration: How it started\nGET TICKETS\nMany folks living in the Bay Area have no idea that the entire East Bay was once full of flowing creeks\, packed with flora and fauna\, and that the East Bay flats were floodplains for these creeks to spread out and be absorbed by the land. Wholly H2O brings these watershed ecosystems back to the surface of people’s imagination and understanding\, along with building the desire to live in them with more awareness and personal responsibility. \nhttps://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/east-bay-creek-restoration-how-it-all-started-panel-conversation \nGenetics and Plant Biology Bldg\, Room 100\, University of California\, Berkeley\, CA \nhttps://www.google.com/maps/?q=37.873513\,-122.264751
